Paris:
French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed on Friday that two French aid workers had been killed in a Russian attack on Ukraine and condemned the attack as “outrageous”.
Ukrainian officials said the two men were recently killed in a drone strike in southern Ukraine.
Macron said on X (formerly Twitter): “Two French aid workers were killed in a Russian strike in Ukraine. This was a cowardly and shameless act.”
He added: “I express my solidarity with all the volunteers working to help people.”
Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourny added: “Russia must bear responsibility for its crimes.”
Two French citizens were killed and three other foreigners were wounded on Thursday in Belislav, near the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson, Ukrainian officials said.
Ukrainian police said they were killed in a drone strike.
Berislav, located along the Dnieper River and close to the front lines, is a frequent target of Russian drones and artillery.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his gratitude to the French for their work in Ukraine’s war-torn country.
“Russian terrorists do not respect national borders or the nationality of their victims.
“Brave French aid workers helped people and we will be forever grateful for their humanity.
“My condolences to their loved ones,” Zelensky wrote on social media.
