Congress poll body meets to finalize candidates for Lok Sabha polls

Congress announced the first list of 39 candidates on Friday

The Congress Central Election Committee (CEC) met on Monday to finalize candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, days after the party released its first poll list.

The Congress party on Friday announced the first list of 39 candidates for which Rahul Gandhi will once again contest from Wayanad in Kerala.

The CEC meeting chaired by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge first held discussions on the five assembly constituencies of Uttarakhand.

Apart from Mr Haq, former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Ambika Soni, Adil Ranjan Chaudhry, TS Singh Deo and Mohammad Jawad among others All are members of the Central Election Commission.

Sonia Gandhi and Uttarakhand in-charge Congress general secretary Kumari Selja were present at the meeting.

At the last Central Election Commission meeting on Thursday, discussions were held on Delhi, Karnataka, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Sikkim, Tripura, Nagaland Lok Sabha seats in states, Manipur, Meghalaya and Lakshwadeep.

According to the first list of candidates announced by the party, former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has been elected from Rajnandgaon in Chhattisgarh. AICC general secretary KC Venugopal was posted from Alappuzha (Kerala) and Shashi Tharoor was renominated from Thiruvananthapuram.
