Last updated: February 7, 2024 18:11 UTC

Opposition and ruling Congress MPs are locked in a bitter row over the color of the Ram Lala idol to be installed in a new temple in Ayodhya. The war of words took place during a debate on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill in the House of Representatives.

Adesh Singh Chauhan, MP from Jaspur, accused the BJP of portraying the Ram Lalla idol in Ayodhya as “black”, which is incompatible with Hinduism The scriptures contradict this description of the deity as “sanwala” (dark). “According to Hindu scriptures, Rama is ‘sanwala’ (dark), but you have made the idol of Rama Lala installed in the Ayodhya temple black,” Chauhan said.

Reacting fiercely to the allegation, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Premchand Aggarwal stood up from his seat and asked the MPs to speak only on the UCC Bill. “You must stop making insulting remarks against Lord Ram,” he said. The BJP leader also alleged that the Congress party was denying the existence of Ram. However, the debate lasted only a few minutes before Speaker Ritu Khanduri intervened and asked the minister to resume his seat and asked the MPs not to deviate from the topic of discussion at the UCC.
