New Delhi, Oct 24 (IANS) The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on Friday launched two Advanced Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs), ICG Ship Ajit and ICGS Aparajit, at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL).
These ships are the seventh and eighth in the series of eight indigenously built FPVs being built by GSL for the ICG, an important step in enhancing the country’s coastal surveillance and response capabilities, an official statement said.
Entirely designed and built by GSL, the FPVs reflect the growing strength of India’s indigenous shipbuilding capabilities.
Measuring 52 meters in length and weighing 320 tonnes, the ships are equipped with Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP), the first of its kind in India, providing better maneuverability and propulsion efficiency, the statement said.
They are capable of multi-mission roles including fisheries protection, coastal patrolling, anti-smuggling, anti-piracy and search and rescue operations, particularly around India’s island territories and Exclusive Economic Zone.
The ships were launched by Manju Sharma in the presence of Dr Mayank Sharma, Financial Advisor (Defence Services), who was the chief guest.
Commander, Inspector General of ICG Region (West) Bhisham Sharma along with senior officials of ICG and Goa Shipyard Limited were also present at the event.
Complimenting ICG and GSL for their achievement, Dr. Mayank Sharma appreciated the contribution of the project to the domestic industry, employment generation and MSME ecosystem and emphasized how such initiatives are promoting national self-reliance in maritime potential.
With the induction of two FPVs, ICG continues to expand its fleet of modern, high speed platforms, ensuring enhanced operational readiness and maritime security along India’s vast coastline.
This launch further strengthens GSL’s position as a major player in building next generation indigenous defense ships for the country. The new ships will also help the ICG to more efficiently protect the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone.
The country’s island territories and fishermen will also benefit from the new addition to the ICG fleet as these ships are capable of multi-mission roles including coastal patrol, anti-smuggling, anti-piracy and search and rescue operations.
