A charlton athletic The club supporter has died after suffering a medical emergency during championship struggle against Portsmouth, Due to which the match had to be cancelled.
Saturday’s lunchtime clash at the Valley was stopped in the 12th minute while a supporter received treatment and was later postponed.
And Charlton later confirmed that the fan had died in hospital despite the efforts of medical staff at the scene.
“The club is saddened to announce that a Charlton Athletic supporter has died following a medical emergency during today’s game at The Valley against Portsmouth,” a club statement read.
“The match was stopped in the 12th minute while the supporter received treatment and was subsequently postponed. “The club would like to thank the Charlton staff and first responders who did everything they could, but sadly the supporter later died in hospital.
“The Club is grateful to the supporters present and the Portsmouth players and staff for their patience and understanding as this tragedy unfolded. Everyone at the Club offers our heartfelt condolences to the supporter’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”
The game had been suspended just 12 minutes earlier as medical teams went to help a fan suffering from a medical emergency in the lower level of the covered end stand.
The two sides remained on the pitch for about seven minutes before referee Matthew Donohue ordered the players to leave the field in the 19th minute and headed towards the tunnel.
The supporter was taken out on a stretcher by paramedics after approximately 12 minutes of treatment. About 45 minutes after the first incident occurred, an announcement came over the tannoy that the match had been cancelled.
Stadium announcer Dave Lockwood said, “Everyone here at Charlton sends their best wishes to the affected supporter.” “We thank our medical team and first responders.
“We will inform when the match will be rescheduled and make an announcement in due course. Please make your way there safely, peacefully and orderly.”
Charlton initially confirmed the abandonment, and stated that the match would be rescheduled at an appropriate time, later confirming that the supporter had tragically died in hospital.
Portsmouth expressed its condolences in a post on social media after news of the death emerged.
“Pompey is deeply saddened to learn that the Charlton supporter who fell ill before today’s game has passed away,” the statement said. “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends at this difficult time.”

However, when it became clear that the spectator would require immediate medical care the match was suspended and later abandoned entirely.
