The Telugu Desam Party has decided not to contest the upcoming Telangana Lok Sabha polls and is yet to decide who to support in the state despite being part of the NDA in neighboring Andhra Pradesh. the person involved said.

However, TDP spokesperson Jyothsna Tirunagari said the TDP will revive its politburo by contesting the local body elections expected to be held in June or July this year.

“Though we are part of the NDA, we will not participate in the Telangana Lok Sabha polls. The decision of who to support in the upcoming Telangana polls will be taken by the party’s senior leadership. So far, there has been no instruction on that,” she told PTI.

The political history of the TDP has been bumpy in the past few years, especially after TDP Chairman N Chandrababu Naidu was arrested by the Andhra Pradesh police in a corruption case.

Following his arrest, the party decided not to contest the November 30 assembly elections in Telangana last year, prompting the state’s president Ksanai Gnaneswar to ditch the TDP and join the former chief minister The ranks of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) led by K Chandrasekahr Rao. Opinion polls.

Since then, the party in Telangana has lost leadership and has seen the exodus of several leaders and cadres. The TDP won two seats in the 2018 assembly elections in Telangana with a vote share of 3.51%. It had signed pre-poll agreements with the Congress and the Communist Party of India at the time.

As the TDP did not contest the polls last year, other parties wooed its leaders and bagged their votes in the assembly polls.

Replying to a query, Tirunagali said there are no official instructions on who to support in Telangana 2023 assembly elections. The choice of support is left to local leaders, who make decisions based on prevailing conditions in their respective constituencies.

“The appointment of a president of the party’s Telangana unit will be decided at the Mahanadu (TDP annual conclave),” the LDF leader said.
