The Election Commission of India on Monday, October 27, announced the second phase of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in 12 states and union territories.
Addressing a press conference, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar along with Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi said the ongoing SIR exercise is the ninth since independence, with the last one being conducted 21 years ago between 2002 and 2004.
Kumar said political parties have repeatedly raised concerns over the quality of the electoral rolls, forcing the Commission to speed up the revision process. He also informed that the first phase of SIR in Bihar was completed with zero appeals, underlining its effectiveness.
The 12 states and union territories where special intensive vetting will begin from tomorrow are Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Goa, Puducherry, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep.
