Kolkata, Oct 23 (IANS) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday visited Sandeshkhali area of North 24 Parganas district as part of its investigation into allegations of ration corruption and land grabbing against arrested Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan.
According to sources, four CBI members reached Dhamakhali area on Thursday.
Supporters of Sheikh Shahjahan of Sandeshkhali were called to the customer service center of a government bank there for questioning. It is reported that he was interrogated for a long time throughout the day. CBI officials also talked to bank employees. It is learned that CBI has intensified its action to investigate the allegations of ration corruption and land grabbing against Shahjahan.
It is noteworthy that on January 5, 2024, a team of the Enforcement Directorate was in Agarghati area under Sandeshkhali Block I to investigate the ration corruption case.
This action was against Sheikh Shahjahan, Executive Director of North 24 Parganas District Council. The ED team that had gone to open the can of worms in Sandeshkhali was attacked by Shahjahan’s supporters.
In February, the area saw widespread protests as villagers accused local TMC strongman Sheikh Shahjahan and his associates of land-grabbing and sexually assaulting women.
Shaikh, who was absconding for 55 days after his supporters attacked an ED team that was going to search his house in connection with the ration scam, was arrested on February 29, 2024.
Later, according to the court order, the responsibility of investigating the incident and ration corruption case was given to CBI. On Thursday, a four-member CBI team reached Dhamakhali area.
CBI officials set up a temporary camp on the second floor of the customer service center of a government bank in Dhamakhali area. According to CBI sources, Shahjahan’s followers were called there and interrogated throughout the day.
Apart from this, bank employees also had to face questions from CBI. The investigators looked into Shahjahan’s financial transactions in that bank – what type of transactions were made and to whom.
