CBI summons Shahjahan Sheikh's brother in connection with assault on army officer case

India’s Central Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday summoned the brother of suspended Trinamool Congress leader Shajahan Sheikh and several others close to him for questioning over the January 5 murder, officials said. A mob attacked an Enforcement Directorate (ED) officer in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali on Sunday.

The CBI team went to Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district and with the help of local police reached the house of Shajahan’s brother Alamgir Sheikh.

Alamgir Sheikh was not at home at the time and an inquiry notice was served on his family, officials said.

The notice was also sent to a number of other people believed to be close to Shahjahan, who was arrested by state police last month. The case was later transferred to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court.

A family member of another local panchayat leader who received the notice confirmed receipt of the notice.

Officials said the investigative agency hopes to question several people as part of the investigation.

CBI sleuths along with forensic and emergency room officials searched Shajahan Sheikh’s residence in Sandeshkhali on March 8 to investigate an attack on emergency room teams in the area, officials said event.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday obtained a 10-day remand of Shajahan Sheikh and three others from the Basirhat divisional court.

Shajahan Sheikh, who has been suspended by the ruling TMC, was arrested in connection with the January 5 mob attack on Education Department officials in Sandeshkhali when central agencies went to raid his residence in connection with the alleged ration distribution scam .

Former state minister Jyoti Priya Mallick, who served as food and supplies department minister from 2011 to 2021, was arrested by the ED in connection with the ration distribution scam.

The Calcutta High Court handed over the case to the CBI on March 5.

Shah Jahan and his aides Shiba Prasad Hazra, Uttam Sardar and others were also accused of sexual abuse and land grabbing in Sandeshkari. Hazra and Sardar were also arrested.
