Canadian province suspends approval of universities enrolling foreign students

The government of British Columbia, Canada, said on Monday that the province will stop approving new colleges for international students until February 2026.

The province will set minimum language requirements for private training institutions and set higher standards for labor market demand and degree quality.

The move comes as the Canadian government has been trying to curb a surge in international student immigration that has been blamed in part on a shortage of rental units and a 7.7 per cent national rent increase in December from a year earlier.

Last week, the federal government announced an immediate two-year cap on new international student permits, which will reduce the country’s enrollment this year by 35 per cent to about 360,000. It will also stop issuing work permits to some students after graduation.

Government data shows there were about 1 million international study permit holders in Canada at the end of last year, about three times the number a decade ago.

Canada has become a popular destination for international students as it is relatively easy for them to obtain a work permit after completing their courses.
