Cambodian PM bans horns from music vehicles to stop dancing on roads

By | Published | No Comments

Videos posted on social media showed people dancing on roads and curbs as passing trucks played rhythmic tunes, and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Mane ordered a ban on the use of musical horns.

Hun Manet, who took over the government last year from his father Hun Sen, who led Cambodia for 38 years, called on the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and police across the country to take immediate action against any vehicles. The stock horn has been replaced with a tune-playable horn by ripping it out and restoring the standard trumpet type.

He said the measure was already implemented by provincial authorities but he wanted to make a public announcement to ensure it was implemented nationwide.

He commented on his Facebook page on Monday that recent social media posts showed “some people, especially teenagers and children, engaging in inappropriate behavior by dancing on the side of the road to the sound of music blaring from truck horns.”

Hong Manai said that this kind of dance affects public order and creates traffic hazards, posing a threat to life and limb, especially to the dancers themselves. One video shows three young people dancing in the middle of the road as a large tow truck drives towards them, setting the pace.

For Cambodians, there will be no more dancing in the streets.
