Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on Wednesday that the report compiled by the Cabinet-Up-Committee (CSC) on reservation policy will soon be placed in the cabinet.
Talking to reporters in Aligarh, Omar said, “The cabinet meeting is held twice a month. So far, the meeting has not been held. The meeting will be held in the next few days and the recommendations by the CSC will be carried forward and will be seen,” he said.
Omar made an excavation in Pakistan to try to destabilize the region and outlines the need for quick development of Jammu and Kashmir. He said, “No matter how much development is done, it is never enough. Given the frequent efforts by our neighboring country to destabilize the region, it becomes more important to ensure that Jammu and Kashmir are witness to maximum progress,” he said.
Certainly, Social Welfare Minister Sakina Masood Itu, who is also the head of CSC, in a post on X, said, “The Cabinet Sub-Committee constituted to investigate the reservation issue has drafted its report within six months fixed time frame. The report will be placed before the cabinet, when it is completed,”
The panel was formally formed on December 10, 2024, approximately 18 days later the cabinet approved its constitution.
The current reservation policy launched during the Central Rules in Jammu and Kashmir has become a focal point of political discourse, alleging that general category candidates have alleged that it benefits the reserved categories beyond their population share.
The issue was also prominently depicted in the 2024 assembly election manifesto of all major political parties. The ruling National Conference (NC) promised to rationalize the reservation policy to address the concerns raised by various sections of the society, in its election agenda.
On 22 November, the cabinet decided to set up a sub-committee to review the complaints, especially the policy raised by the students.
A month later, Aga Ruhullah Mehdi, a MP from Srinagar, staged a protest outside the Chief Minister’s residence, seeking a proper review of the reservation policy.
During a meeting with the opposing students on the same day, CM Omar Abdullah assured that the cabinet sub-committee would finalize its report within six months.
The issue was widely discussed during the final assembly session in Jammu, PC President Sajad Ghani strongly advocated for the rationalization of the current reservation policy- (KNO)
