In response to the rising domestic tourism boom, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday said port connectivity, tourism infrastructure and facilities will be developed in our islands including Lakshadweep Facility projects.
This will also help create jobs, the Finance Minister said in the 2024 mid-term budget speech.
“States will be encouraged to comprehensively develop iconic tourism centers for branding and marketing globally. A framework will be established to rate centers on the basis of quality of facilities and services. Long-term interest-free loans will be provided to states for such development Matching funds,” she added.

Tejinder Gupta, partner and leader (tourism and hospitality) at Grant Thornton Bharat, said: “There is ample opportunity in the tourism industry, including spiritual tourism, to promote entrepreneurship. States will get long-term funding to fund tourism, which will attract local and the influx of foreign tourists.”
Promoting spiritual tourism and domestic tourism is India’s way of building soft power by enhancing the Indianness of the Indian diaspora across the world, he added. This is a great way to build diplomatic power in a multipolar world.
