From 2019 to 2023: What becomes cheaper and what becomes more expensive

2023-2024 Budget

• cheaper: TVs, smartphones, compressed gases, shrimp feed, lab-grown diamonds, electric vehicle lithium-ion battery manufacturing machinery
• More expensive: Cigarettes, bicycles, costume jewelry, air travel, electric chimneys, scrap copper, textiles

2022-2023 Budget

• cheaper: Imitation jewelry, computers, mobile phones, laptops, cut and polished diamonds, gemstones
• More expensive: Umbrellas, imported items, unmixed fuel, chocolate, smart watches and their earplugs

2021-2022 Budget

• cheaper: Gold, silver, leather products, nylon clothes, iron, steel, copper products

2020-2021 Budget

• cheaper: Raw sugar, skim milk, soy fiber, soy protein, certain alcoholic beverages, agricultural animal products, imported newsprint, lightweight and coated paper, purified terephthalic acid
• More expensive: Medical equipment, footwear, furniture, wall fans, cigarettes and other tobacco products, clay iron, steel, copper, CV parts

2019-2020 Budget

• cheaper: Affordable housing, set-top boxes, imported defense equipment, imported electric vehicle parts, camera modules, mobile phone chargers, imported artificial kidney raw materials, imported wool fibers, tops
• More expensive: Petrol, diesel, cash withdrawals exceeding Rs 1 Crore per year, fully imported cars, split air conditioners, cigarettes, shisha and chewing tobacco products, imported auto parts, imported stainless steel products, imported gold and other precious metals, imported paper and paper products include Printed books, imported plugs, sockets and switches, CTV cameras, speakers

What is the medium-term budget?

An interim budget, also known as a vote of accounts, is a budget proposed by the central government in the short term before a general election. In an election year, the sitting government is unable to present a complete budget, so the Union Finance Minister presents an interim budget on behalf of the government, covering the Centre’s expenditure and revenue in the short term. This budget remains in effect until a new government is elected and takes office.

When will the full budget be released?

The full budget will be released after the newly formed government takes office following the Lok Sabha election results. The government will then submit a federal budget, which will be a comprehensive financial plan presented each year outlining the government’s revenue, spending and policy initiatives for the coming fiscal year.
