bruno guimares And Anthony Gordon Scored for the second time in five days newcastle An easy 2-1 Premier League victory over 10-man Burnley at St James’ Park.

Guimaraes found the back of the net straight from a corner and Gordon converted a penalty in first-half stoppage time, minutes after Lucas Pires was sent off for bringing down Anthony Elanga, on an afternoon when anything could have gone wrong for the struggling visitors, who responded with a last-gasp penalty from substitute Gian Fleming.

the victory was exactly the same magpiesThe first player to make £55m, signing Yoane Wiesa as a late substitute in the summer, was needed ahead of Wednesday’s trip to Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League and the derby at Sunderland the following weekend, although it resulted in a poor performance in front of a crowd of 52,041.

Indeed, the Clarets dominated from the start, winning two early corners which were cleared by Nick Voltemed and forcing goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to make a save in the third minute when Tino Livramiento’s attempted clearance bounced off Jakob Bruun Larsson and headed wide of the goal.

Lyle Foster sent a dipping shot from distance as the visitors continued to push forward, but the hosts finally began to take hold.

Defender Maxime Esteve was in the right place at the right time to deny Voldemort Joe Willok Guimaraes and Jacob Ramsey teamed up to set him up, and Elanga called on former Magpie Martin Dubravka to make his first save of the game with a 16th-minute try on the turn.

Ramsdale looked increasingly uncomfortable amid set-piece attacks, but it was Dubravka who was relieved to see Gordon’s 28th-minute shot clip the far post and fall safely away.

However, the Slovakia international was subbed out just three minutes later when he came on and failed to get a hold of Guimaraes’ left wing corner under pressure from Gordon, only to see the Brazilian’s ball go over his head and into the net.

Guimaraes wasted a free-kick in the 36th minute with a misplaced strike after Kyle Walker had brought down Gordon badly, but Malik Thiaw had to block Brunn Larsson’s effort seconds later with the visitors still in it.

Dubravka held off Elanga’s drive in the 41st minute after sharp counter-attacks by Ramsey and Gordon, but it was the Sweden international’s pace that caught out full-back Pires, who clipped the wide-man following Gordon’s ball two minutes later and was sent off.

But he was once again steering the ball out of his own net deep into stoppage time when, after referee Stuart Attwell was advised to turn to the monitors, he awarded a penalty for handball against Leslie Ugochukwu, which Gordon sent off with a minimum of fuss.

Dubravka got on top of Guimaraes’ effortless strike, blocked substitute Lewis Hall’s shot and then had to make a save from his own defender Esteve as he got his head on the ball from Elanga before hitting the bar with Gordon’s fine effort in the 73rd minute.

Burnley got their reward just before the end when Ramsey was elected to take over and Fleming struck from the spot.
