British police face misconduct charges over stabbing of Indian teenager

Grace O’Malley Kumar was killed in a knife attack.

London:

An unnamed British police officer has faced a misconduct hearing after sharing details of his injuries via WhatsApp after stabbing an Indian-origin teenager and his friend in Nottingham last year.

The Sun reported on Monday that a misconduct hearing last month heard how police officers released information about students Grace O’Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Webber and Details of school administrator Ian Coates. In June 2023, Valdo Calocane launched a crazy attack in a city in central England.

A second officer, Matthew Gell, is said to have passed on the “disgusting” message to his wife and a friend.

“What an abhorrent way the investigation was conducted. It is inexcusable to learn that there was unnecessary voyeurism in the hearts of our loved ones,” Barnaby’s mother Emma Webber told the newspaper.

While PC Gell received a final written warning, the unnamed officer was instructed to undergo “additional learning”.

Grace O’Malley Kumar is a 19-year-old medical student and London-based doctors Sanjoy Kumar and Sinead O’Malley daughter. As she walked back to Nottingham University with Webber, they were attacked and killed. Callowan, 32, was sentenced to a mental health order and detained at a high-security hospital following a hearing at Nottingham Crown Court on January 25.

The judge told Caloocan he would likely never be released so he could receive treatment for paranoid schizophrenia – a mental illness that can be “remitted” with treatment but cannot be cured. He noted that he was satisfied with Caloocan and that had he not suffered from the disease, he would not have committed the “appalling” crimes.

However, the victim’s family has since met with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to discuss what appears to be a lenient sentence, amid reports that a public inquiry may be held. The Sun reported that the family of the deceased had been told that Sunak had not ruled out such an investigation.

Caloocan pleaded guilty to manslaughter and had reduced responsibility for the killings of two students and school administrator Coates.
