British man earns degree at 95, now considering another course

He is now considering starting a part-time PhD

At 95, Dr David Marjot has become Kingston University’s oldest graduate and is considering another course. The retired psychiatrist holds a Master’s degree in Modern European Philosophy.

Dr Marjot, who lives in Surrey, completed his latest studies 72 years after qualifying as a doctor. Changes in the UK psychiatry profession over the years led him to decide to return to education to learn more about philosophy and how it can be applied to modern professions.

“I knew my time was limited, so when I saw an advert for a course in my local area in the Times Literary Supplement, I decided to apply,” he told Kingston University. “The staff and students at Kingston University have been extremely welcoming to me, it’s a fantastic course and the teaching is excellent, so I feel privileged to have received this degree and to be part of such a fantastic university”

On graduation day, Dr. Machote, accompanied by her son and son-in-law, walked onto the podium and was awarded her degree by Professor Helen Lavelle, Provost of Kingston University. She received warm applause from her peers and the audience.

Dr. Machot advises those considering returning to education after a few decades. “It’s a bit of a gamble, but the bottom line is, if you’re interested, do it,” he said. “It’s hard work and my memory isn’t what it used to be, but I’m lucky to be able to It was a very positive experience having world-class teachers. I think it’s important to keep challenging yourself even as you get older.”

The university said in a press release that after 65 years of marriage, Dr. Marjot’s wife tragically passed away a few years before the coronavirus pandemic, and the master’s program was important for him to keep his energy high during this time.

At 95, Dr Marjot is now one of the UK’s oldest ever graduates, with Archie White, 96, the current record holder, who graduated from the University of Brighton in 2021.

He is now considering starting a part-time PhD, which he will complete at the age of 102!
