Breast cancer, now the world’s most common cancer-causing disease, could kill 1 million people a year by 2040, a new Lancet commission has found.

The report said that in the five years to the end of 2020, about 7.8 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer, and about 685,000 women died from the disease in the same year.

The committee estimates that global breast cancer cases will increase from 2.3 million in 2020 to more than 3 million in 2040, with low- and middle-income countries being “disproportionately affected”.

The report adds that by 2040, the number of people dying from the disease will reach 1 million each year.

The Lancet report noted that breast cancer creates “glaring inequalities” and brings symptoms, despair and financial burden, which are often “hidden and under-addressed”.
