Blue Aadhaar for your child: What is it, how to apply and more

Blue Aadhar Card holds importance for many reasons.

Aadhaar has emerged as an important Know Your Customer (KYC) document in the country, serving as a vital prerequisite for accessing government subsidies and participating in various welfare programs. Beyond its primary role in government initiatives, Aadhaar has gained prominence as an important identity proof in various sectors. This is attributed to the extensive information it contains, which includes citizens’ full names, permanent addresses and dates of birth, all intricately linked to a unique 12-digit number assigned by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

Aadhaar cards are available in two different categories to cater to different demographics. The first category is designed for adults, which includes the standard Aadhaar card. Meanwhile, the second category is specifically designed for children and is called ‘Baal Aadhaar’. This special edition facilitates parents to apply for Aadhaar card for their newborn babies, ensuring a seamless process for enrollment and documentation right from the early stages of the child’s life.

According to UIDAI website‘Bal Aadhaar’ printed in blue letters has been introduced by UIDAI to indicate the Aadhaar number to children below five years of age. The letter informs the Aadhaar holder (parent) to update Aadhaar details with biometrics on attaining the age of five years, otherwise Aadhaar will be deactivated and will not be valid. A blue colored letter has been introduced to clearly differentiate the letter for children, to ease mass communication for people to update the biometrics of their children when they attain the age of five years.

As per Section 3(1) of the Aadhaar Act, 2016, every resident is entitled to obtain Aadhaar number, including children, by submitting his/her demographic information and biometric information during the process of enrolment. Biometric information is not collected for enrollment of children under 5 years of age, only demographic and photograph information is collected. The child’s Aadhaar number is linked to the Aadhaar of one of the parents.

Child’s biometric data not required for ‘Bal Aadhaar’

No biometrics will be taken for children below 5 years of age. Their UID will be processed based on demographic information and facial photograph linked to their parents’ UID. When these children turn 5 and 15, they will have to update their biometrics of ten fingers, one iris and one facial photograph. Information to this effect will be mentioned in the original Aadhaar letter.
