Ahead of the possible announcement of Lok Sabha elections by the Election Commission next month, the BJP is likely to release the names of 100 candidates on Thursday. Sources told NDTV that the list is expected to include the party’s two most powerful leaders – Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
Sources said the BJP’s Central Election Committee meeting is likely to be held on February 29, after which the first list of candidates may be announced. The first list will be important as the ruling party has set a huge target of winning 370 out of 543 Lok Sabha seats and is working towards securing 400 seats for the NDA.
PM Modi is an MP from Varanasi, from where he has won twice. He was elected in 2014 with a huge margin of 3.37 lakh votes and increased it to 4.8 lakh in 2019. Amit Shah had contested the 2019 elections from Gandhinagar, till then this seat was held by veteran BJP leader LK Advani.
Last week, the Prime Minister had urged BJP leaders and workers to work diligently to meet the party’s target of winning 370 seats and told them that the next 100 days would be crucial.
“In the next 100 days, we all have to reach out to every new voter, every beneficiary, every community. We have to win the trust of everyone. To take the NDA to 400, the BJP has to cross the 370 (seats) mark ,” the PM had said at the party’s national conference.
