Chandigarh:

Farmers on Sunday protested against BJP candidate Dinesh Babu in Batala and party leader Arvind Khanna in Barnala, Punjab, as the party leaders continue to face challenges over lack of A situation where you feel angry about having your demands met.

BJP candidates and leaders have been facing protests from farmers who are showing them black flags while contesting the Lok Sabha polls.

Party candidates Hans Raj Hans from Faridkot constituency, Taranjit Singh Sandhu from Amritsar and Preneet Kaur from Patiala have witnessed the anger of farmers.

In Batala’s Fatehgarh Churian, a group of farmers on Sunday raised slogans against Mr Babu, the BJP candidate from Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat.

The police even tried to prevent protesters from going to places where Mr Babu and supporters of the BJP were holding election-related events.

A protester in Fatehgarh Churian said they will continue to oppose the BJP leaders.

Responding to the protests, BJP candidate Babu said only his party can solve their problems and other political groups will “exploit” their vested interests.

“We stand with farmers, I am a farmer too. Their problems can be solved through dialogue,” Mr Babu said.

In another incident, BJP leader Arvind Khanna faced protests from farmers in Barnala, where he was campaigning.

A heavy police presence was deployed and roadblocks were erected.

A woman protester has slammed the BJP government for not allowing farmers to travel to Delhi and using “force” against them.

Another protester said they were protesting peacefully against Mr Khanna but police did not allow them to move towards the venue.

Mr. Khanna, however, claimed that it was not farmer groups but AAP workers who “planned” such protests.

Mr Khanna claimed: “Farmers are either in the fields (harvesting wheat) or in mandis (selling wheat). These agencies are (Chief Minister) Bhagwant Mann’s people and they are not farmers. “The Modi government is insisting on farmers,” he added.

Meanwhile, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, the BJP candidate from Amritsar Lok Sabha seat, is also facing the wrath of farmers, saying he comes from a family of farmers.

He said his focus was on increasing farmers’ income. “I’m campaigning and I’m going to continue to do that,” he said.

Farmers under the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) have said they will oppose the BJP and demand the people to “punish” the saffron party in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Farmers loyal to various farm bodies are unhappy with the BJP-led Center not accepting their demands, including the minimum support price law.

They are also angry that they are not allowed to travel to Delhi, forcing them to camp at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points in Punjab and Haryana.

SKM (apolitical) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) are spearheading the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march by farmers to put pressure on the government to accept their demands, which include a legal guarantee that the Center should provide minimum support price (MSP) for crops.

The farmers have been staying at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since security forces blocked their march on February 13.

The final phase of voting for 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab will be held on June 1.
