Mumbai, Oct 24 (IANS) The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday targeted Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena over its repeated claims of maintaining dominance in the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.
State BJP chief spokesperson Keshav Upadhyay said, “‘Mumbai is ours’ and ‘Mumbaikars are behind us’ are the claims made by the Uddhav Thackeray camp that it appears as if his name is written on the land records of Mumbai. However, the reality is that Shiv Sena Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray’s strength in Mumbai has diminished significantly over the years.” He said that a look at some figures clearly shows the decline the Thackeray camp is facing.
“Looking at the last five municipal corporation elections, while 112 to 115 seats are required for a majority, Uddhav’s group has not won a majority in the last thirty years, leave alone getting close to a century, having done so only once. Barely struggling to reach power, the Uddhav Thackeray camp should look at some statistics. Out of the last five elections, only once, in 1997, has the Thackeray camp won a majority. to win the election Was successful. More than 100 corporators, barely 103. While this was Shiv Sena’s highest point in the last 30 years, it was still far from a majority in the BMC,β he said in his post on X.
“Subsequently, starting with the 2002 municipal elections, the decline continued. In 2002, Uddhav Thackeray’s party’s tally dropped to 97. In the 2007 election, it reached 84 seats, while the MNS won 7 seats. In 2012, Uddhav’s group sank even further, managing to elect only 75 corporators in the BMC. On the other hand, the MNS won 27. Won seats,β he said. It was said.
“Proclaiming ‘we are doomed in alliance with BJP’, Uddhav Thackeray sounded the trumpet for the 2017 municipal corporation elections, but the number of corporators barely reached 84. Six out of seven corporators from the MNS, whose praises are now being sung, were bought off,” Upadhyay said.
“In other words, no matter how much they boast, Uddhav’s group never crosses the limit of 75 to 85 corporators. And that too, only because of the alliance with the BJP! Today, Balasaheb Thackeray’s staunch Shiv Sainiks are with Eknath Shinde. The empty chairs at the recent Dussehra rally made it clear that neither the Sainiks nor the public are with the Uddhav Thackeray camp now.” Upadhyay claimed.
Upadhyay also hit out at Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, saying he should keep speaking out because whatever he predicts, exactly the opposite is happening.
“Raut had announced that both the Thackerays will show magic (in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections). However, in just two days, cracks have emerged within the Maha Vikas Aghadi. The Congress has announced that it does not want to contest the BMC elections with Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray. Now the Samajwadi Party is also going to leave the MVA. On the other hand, the Sharad Pawar faction has no role to play. So, Sanjay Raut, you should keep talking, βhe said.
