Malda (West Bengal):
Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday sparked controversy when he predicted a political “explosion” that would break up the Trinamool Congress (TMC) early next week.
Addressing an election meeting in Malda, West Bengal, in support of party candidate Srirupa Mitra Choudhury, Adhikari claimed that a “huge blast” would shatter the TMC led by Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee.
“Wait for Monday. A huge explosion will shatter Pisi-Baipo’s party. They will not be able to recover,” the opposition leader told party workers.
When questioned by reporters, Mr Adhikari clarified that he was referring to a political unrest and insisted that the TMC was already in a precarious position.
He promised that women in the state would get Rs 3,000 per month under the renamed empowerment scheme once the BJP comes to power.
Mr Adhikari mocked the TMC’s victory celebrations in north Bengal, calling it a sign of frustration and despair.
TMC leaders have not responded to Mr Adhikari’s claims so far.
