Patna, October 27 (IANS) A major tragedy occurred in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district on Monday, when four children drowned in a water pit while taking bath.
The incident occurred at around 11 am in Navtolia village of Ismailpur police station area of Naugachhia sub-division.
According to the police, a group of six children from Chhattu Tola had gone to take bath in a water pit which was filled with water from the recent flood in river Ganga.
Two managed to get out safely, but four children drowned one after the other.
The deceased have been identified as Prince Kumar (10), son of Mithilesh Kumar, resident of Chhattu Singh Tola, and Nandan Kumar (10), son of Kishori Mandal. Two others have not been identified yet.
Villagers and local divers pulled the children out of the pit and took them to Ismailpur Primary Health Centre, where doctors declared them dead.
The entire village is in mourning due to this incident, along with Chhath festival is also going on in the area.
On receiving the information, Ismailpur Police Station Officer and his team reached the spot and controlled the situation and sent the bodies to Naugachia Sub-Divisional Hospital for post-mortem.
Police have started investigating the incident.
“Due to the recent floods, the potholes in the area are filled with Ganga water. The children entered one of them without realizing the depth. The pothole was slippery and muddy, and as soon as they went in, they failed to come out of it.”
The station in-charge said, “We are waiting for the post-mortem reports of the deceased. We are also taking statements of the survivors.”
As mourning spread in the area, hundreds of villagers gathered at the spot.
Earlier on Sunday, two girls drowned in the river near Ayar village under Agiaon Bazar police station of Bhojpur district.
The victims have been identified as 14-year-old Samrajiya Khatoon and 15-year-old Ashmeen Khatoon, both residents of the same village and close friends.
According to an official, the girls had gone to the river to wash clothes when their feet slipped and they fell into deep water.
A local girl who witnessed the incident raised an alarm, due to which the villagers rushed towards the spot.
Despite their efforts, they were only able to recover bodies.
