Patna, October 24 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday visited Karpoori village, the birthplace of Bharat Ratna Jannayak Karpoori Thakur, and paid floral tributes to the late leader.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was with the Prime Minister during the visit.
The two leaders garlanded the statue of Karpoori Thakur and visited the Karpoori Thakur Library, where they saw a collection of rare photographs depicting important moments of the former Chief Minister’s life – from his participation in the freedom struggle and resistance during the Emergency to his two terms as Chief Minister of Bihar.
The Prime Minister also interacted with Karpoori Thakur’s family members and folk artistes of the area, posed for photographs and appreciated their performances.
The villagers of Karpuri village gave a warm welcome to the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister.
Karpoori Thakur, two-time Chief Minister of Bihar, belonged to an underprivileged community and is remembered for his simplicity, integrity and commitment to social justice.
He played an important role during the Emergency and worked with Jayaprakash Narayan in leading the democratic movement against the Indira Gandhi government.
After visiting Karpuri village, PM Modi, while addressing a public rally, described it as a memorable and emotional day.
The Prime Minister said, “Today is a very important day in my life. Before coming here, I had gone to Karpoori village, where I got the opportunity to pay tribute to Bharat Ratna Jan Nayak Karpoori Thakur. It is his blessings that people like us, coming from backward and poor families, are standing on this stage today.”
Lauding Thakur’s lifelong efforts for the marginalized people, PM Modi said, “Bharat Ratna Jan Nayak Karpoori Thakur played a very important role in bringing social justice in independent India and connecting the poor and the underprivileged with new opportunities. Our government is honored to confer the Bharat Ratna on him – a very proud moment for all of us. He remains a source of inspiration for our government.”
Reiterating his government’s focus on inclusive growth, PM Modi said, “We have worked with a determination to empower the poor, Dalits, Mahadalits, backward and extremely backward classes. Our government provided 10 per cent reservation for economically weaker sections of the general category and extended the reservation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes for the next 10 years.”
The Prime Minister’s Karpoori Gram Yatra comes amid the ongoing campaign for the Bihar Assembly elections 2025, highlighting the NDA’s emphasis on social justice and empowerment rooted in the legacy of Karpoori Thakur.
