U.S. President Joe Biden delivered his State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress on Thursday night as he sought to tout his administration’s achievements, push lawmakers to take action on security aid and persuade voters ahead of his re-election bid in November.

Biden said in a video posted on social media on Wednesday that he planned to “update everyone on our progress and chart the path forward.”

He is expected to discuss infrastructure, drug prices, student debt, abortion rights and gun control, among other topics.

In excerpts of Biden’s speech released by the White House, the president focused specifically on the Supreme Court’s 2022 overturn of Roe v. Wade, which guaranteed abortion rights.

“Obviously, those who brag about overturning Roe v. Wade know nothing about the power of women in America. But they discovered reproductive freedom when they voted and won in 2022, 2023, and they will discover it again in 2024 ,” the Biden plan said, according to excerpts.

“If Americans send me a pro-choice Congress, I guarantee you this: I will restore Roe v. Wade to become the law of the land again,” the senior excerpt continues.

The speech comes as it appears increasingly likely that Biden will face former President Donald Trump in a rematch of the 2020 presidential election.

Biden also appeared to be trying to contrast himself with Trump, according to excerpts of senior speeches.

“My life has taught me to embrace freedom and democracy. A future based on core American values: Honesty, decency, dignity, equality. Respect for everyone. To give everyone a fair chance. Let hate have no safe haven. Now, some with People my age saw a different story: an American story filled with resentment, revenge, and retribution. That was not me,” the Biden plan said.

In his prepared remarks, Biden also took credit for helping improve the nation’s economy.

“I came into office determined to get us through one of the most difficult periods in our country’s history. We have. This won’t make news, but in thousands of towns and cities, the American people are writing the greatest comeback story ever told. ,” Biden is expected to say.

The speech comes as the Biden administration urges Congress to pass security aid to Ukraine and Israel as lawmakers work to fund the government and avoid a shutdown.

After Biden’s remarks, Alabama Sen. Katie Britt will provide a Republican response.
