President Joe Biden is scheduled to take an aerial tour of Baltimore’s collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge on Friday and announce plans to continue efforts to repair and replace the bridge and fully reopen the Port of Baltimore.
In the early morning of March 26, a cargo ship lost power and collided with a support structure, destroying the bridge. Within seconds the bridge collapsed, killing six construction workers on the bridge.
The president’s visit includes Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Linda Fagan and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Commander-in-Chief Scott Spellmon.
Biden also plans to participate in a briefing on ongoing response and recovery efforts for bridges and operations at the Port of Baltimore, one of the busiest ports in the United States. The incident disrupted ship traffic at the Port of Ballytmore, which could cause a serious blow to the regional and national economies.
Last week, the White House released $60 million in federal emergency relief funds for Maryland’s initial costs and announced that the U.S. Small Business Administration would provide low-interest disaster loans to qualifying businesses affected by the accident.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said Thursday it expects to open limited access to the Port of Baltimore by the end of the month. The agency said the channel would support one-way traffic in and out of the port.
