U.S. President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump moved closer to a rematch of the 2020 presidential election on Tuesday, winning nearly every party nominating contest held in multiple states across the country.

Biden won in 15 states holding Democratic primaries or caucuses, including Virginia, Texas, Minnesota and Colorado. A game has yet to be called. As of Tuesday, Trump had 13 victories.

With little opposition in the Democratic race – typical for an incumbent president – Biden looked ahead to the November election and warned that Trump’s re-election would mean a period of “chaos, Division and Darkness” defined term.

“Today, millions of voters across the country made their voices heard, demonstrating that they are ready to fight back against Donald Trump’s extreme plans to roll us back,” Biden said in a statement.

Speaking to supporters in Florida, Trump said the United States had been “hit hard” over the past three years as he blamed Biden for his handling of the economy and immigration.

The former leader, who lost his 2020 re-election bid to Biden, celebrated his first victory on Tuesday and touted the November election as “the most important day in the history of our country.”

“They call it Super Tuesday for a reason,” Trump said. “This is a big deal.”

Trump’s wins on Tuesday included races in California, Colorado, Maine, Minnesota, North Carolina and Texas.

Nikki Haley, the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and the last major opponent of Trump in the Republican race, won in Vermont on Tuesday.

Haley won Sunday’s primary in Washington, her second win of the nominating cycle.

After a round of defeats in January and February, Haley pledged to stay in the race until at least Super Tuesday, arguing to her supporters that re-electing Trump as president would be damaging to the country.

More states will hold nominating contests in the coming weeks, with Biden and Trump seeking to gain enough delegates to secure their party nominations ahead of the convention, where the parties will formally choose their candidates on the November ballot. .

The Republican Party holds its national convention in July and the Democratic Party in August.

Trump’s legal situation is looming as he faces an unprecedented four criminal indictments, including 91 charges, one of which is set to go to trial in three weeks.

With eight months until the 2024 presidential election, national polls show Trump with a narrow lead over Biden.

Biden will also be in the spotlight Thursday night when he delivers his annual State of the Union address before Congress and a national television audience.

He is expected to tout the progress of the U.S. economy during his more than three years in office, even though polls show many Americans believe he has mismanaged the economy and frequently complain about rising grocery prices.
