New Delhi:

Former Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Sunday pointed to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as the responsibility of the Indian Bloc, which he said lacked coherent leadership and policies. Speaking to PTI, he also said that internal conflicts and ambitions were hampering the effectiveness of the opposition front.

Naqvi, a senior BJP leader who served as minority affairs minister from 2017-22, has taken aim at the leadership crisis in the Indian bloc.

“Rahul Gandhi is a liability to the opposition bloc in India. Their frustration over impending defeat is now visible through their abusive behavior, which reflects their frustration. The bloc in India is in no way a challenge to the BJP,” He said.

He also warned that some opposition parties may lose their recognition by the Election Commission after losing to the BJP in elections.

The elections announced yesterday will be held in seven phases from April 19.

Mr Gandhi will today conclude his 6,700-km “Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra” across the country with a massive rally in Mumbai to unite the opposition ahead of the polls. Several opposition figures, including Uddhav Thackeray, Sharad Pawar, Tejashwi Yadav, Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin is expected to attend the rally.

Speaking at an event before the rally, Gandhi responded to remarks by a BJP MP who spoke of “changing” the constitution. Referring to Anantkumar Hegde’s remarks that his party needs a two-thirds majority in both houses of Parliament to amend the constitution, he said the party has made “a lot of noise” but does not have the courage to “change” the constitution.

The BJP termed the MP’s remarks as the MP’s “personal opinion” and sought clarification.
