Bengal’s Sandeshkhali in trouble, National Commission for Scheduled Castes steps in after National Commission for Women

After the National Commission for Women, now the National Commission for Scheduled Castes has intervened in the Sandeshkari incident, which could create more trouble for the West Bengal government, when women held marches in different districts with sticks and brooms in hand.

Following the news reports, the committee has written to the West Bengal Chief Secretary, Commissioner of Police and Inspector General of Police. The committee has also written to the district magistrate concerned. In a scathing letter, the commission sought to know what action was taken in the case within three days, including details of the FIR and compensation awarded. The letter warned that if this was not done, the committee could subpoena senior officials.

“Please note that if the Commission does not receive your reply within the stipulated time, the Commission may exercise its civil court powers under Article 338 of the Constitution of India and issue a summons requiring you to appear in person or through a representative of the Commission,” the letter read.

Earlier in the day, NCW said on X (formerly Twitter) that it was “deeply disturbed by reports of wrongful imprisonment and rape of Hindu women by TMC party office Sheikh Shah Jahan in Basirhat, West Bengal”.

Urging swift action, it also sent a letter to the state attorney general asking for “immediate intervention and medical care for the victims.” The NCW is said to have requested a detailed investigative report within 48 hours, while an investigative committee headed by member Delina will visit the scene.
