Kolkata, Oct 29 (IANS) Stepping up his political attack against the BJP-led central government, Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha leader Abhishek Banerjee on Wednesday said, “If local BJP leaders ask for the birth certificates of their parents during the special intensive revision (SIR) or National Register of Citizens (NRC) verification of the voters’ list in West Bengal, they should be hanged.”
Banerjee made the statement after meeting the family of 57-year-old Pradeep Kar, who allegedly committed suicide in Panihati in North 24 Parganas district due to fear of SIR and the alleged NRC exercise.
The Trinamool leader also announced that a rally would be organized by the party in Panihati on Thursday demanding justice for Pradeep Kar.
He accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of being responsible for creating an atmosphere of panic among the people of the state and demanded criminal action against them.
“Pradeep Kar died due to concern over NRC and SIR. FIR should be filed against Amit Shah and Gyanesh Kumar. Will they themselves be able to produce the documents they sought from common citizens?” Banerjee asked.
Banerjee was accompanied by party leaders Partha Bhowmik, Nirmal Ghosh and Debraj Chakraborty during her visit to Kar’s residence.
Speaking to media persons after his visit, the Trinamool Congress leader said, “Next time local BJP leaders come to your area, stop them and ask them to produce the certificates of their parents. Tie them to a tree or lamp post and tell them that they will not be released until they produce the documents of their parents and grandparents.”
Banerjee also said, “We don’t believe in violence. Don’t beat them (BJP leaders), if they ask for the birth certificates of your parents just tie them up.”
On Tuesday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused BJP of spreading fear and weaponizing NRC in the name of conducting SIR.
