Moscow, Russia:
A Belarusian man who set fire to a railway substation in western Russia has been detained on suspicion of pro-Ukrainian sabotage, the Russian state news agency reported on Monday.
Since launching a full-scale offensive against Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has detained dozens of people for engaging in sabotage, including efforts to disrupt its vast rail network.
The suspect, who was born in 1998, attacked a railway substation in Tula, about 175 kilometers (100 miles) south of Moscow, RIA Novosti reported.
Reports said he was already serving a sentence in Belarus for “hooliganism” and carried out the arson on the orders of a Ukrainian who promised money.
He was detained by security services in the Russian city of Voronezh, where he planned to commit another crime, the FSB security service reported.
AFP could not immediately verify the report.
Kyiv typically does not claim responsibility but often cheers attacks on Russia’s rail network, which it believes Moscow uses to transport troops and fuel its offensive.
In December, Russia arrested a Belarusian man for placing explosives on two trains traveling through Siberia, a crime it also blamed on Ukraine.
