Bangladesh counter-terrorism agency officials attacked, their vehicles vandalized

Kolkata:

A team of counter-terrorism agency National Investigation Agency (NIA) was attacked during a raid in Bangladesh’s East Midnapore district this morning. The incident took place in East Midnapore’s Bhupati Nagar area in which an NIA officer was injured.

An NIA team has arrived in Bhupati Nagar to conduct a raid as part of the ongoing investigation into the 2022 bomb blasts that rocked the region.

As they began their search operation, they suddenly encountered a hostile mob. The situation escalated quickly when rioters launched attacks on NIA officials, causing property damage, including cracked vehicle windshields.

According to police, the NIA team earlier in the day arrested two persons in connection with the bomb blasts who were on their way to Kolkata when their vehicle was mobbed by locals. Villagers reportedly surrounded the vehicle and hurled a large number of stones, injuring an NIA officer.

“Locals attacked the vehicle and pelted stones at it,” the Press Trust of India news agency quoted a senior police officer as saying. “One of the police officers was also injured,” the NIA said.

After the incident, the police sent a large number of police officers to the scene to control the situation.

The background of this incident dates back to December 3, 2022, when a devastating blast occurred at the Kucha house in Bhupati Nagar, killing three people. Subsequently, the National Intelligence Service took charge of the investigation of the case.
