Members of right-wing group Bajrang Dal today protested at a private Christian missionary-run school in Tripura capital Agartala after a teacher allegedly stopped a student from wearing a wristband decorated with a religious symbol. The protesters claimed that the act had hurt religious sentiments.
Holy Cross School officials called the incident “unfortunate” in a statement and said the wristband had been returned to the student.
Officials stressed that the institution “respects all religious beliefs”.
Bajrang Dal’s Tripura state coordinator Tutan Saha expressed concern about “religious restrictions in missionary-run schools” and said such actions “hinder the natural development of children”.
He condemned the incident, calling it an attack on Hindu religion, culture, tradition and constitutional rights.
The student’s father, Manoj Nath, who is a faculty member at the state government-run college, said the wristband “has important religious value” as it was “brought from the Somnath temple in Gujarat”.
The school’s principal, Rev. Jillson Tom, expressed regret over the incident and reaffirmed the school’s commitment to secular values.
The school also detailed the actions it took to immediately address the situation, including reinstating student wristbands as demanded by parents and protesters.
