Fire breaks out in nursing home, killing at least 16 people Indonesiaof sulawesi Islands on Sunday night.
Residents were sleeping when a fire broke out in a single-story house in the city of Manado, police said on Monday.
North Sulawesi police spokesman Alamsyah Hasibuan said: “The on-site team has confirmed that the current death toll is 16.”
“Fifteen of them were burned to death, while the body of one victim was intact.”
Video broadcast by local news channels showed residents appearing to help an elderly man escape from the burning building as fires tore through homes and turned the night sky orange.
Hasibuan said at least 15 survivors were being treated at two hospitals in Manado.
Officials said the remains of the victims were taken to the hospital for identification with the assistance of family members.
Local officials said police were trying to identify the dead, many of whom were in “unidentifiable” condition.
firefighterOfficials said he arrived at the scene with six trucks and took more than two hours to extinguish the blaze after nearby residents reported it to emergency services.
A fire official said the fire spread quickly, prompting firefighters to focus on containing the blaze in densely populated neighborhoods.
Olva Sumual, the manager of the house, said that the residents of the house are all elderly people and that there were about 30 people in the house when the fire broke out.
Neighbor Steven Mokodompit tells us Deticon At around 8pm local time, when he arrived to help, the kitchen of the nursing home was already on fire. He said he and other neighbors involved in the rescue heard the explosion and screamed for help. “In just five minutes, the fire engulfed the entire building,” he said.
Initial police reports said the fire was caused by an electrical fault, but officials later said the cause was still under investigation.
Earlier this month, a fire broke out in a seven-story building in the capital Jakarta, killing 22 people.
