Assam extends 'disturbed area' status of 4 districts by 6 months

Overall law and order situation has improved, according to Assam Police (Representative)

The Assam government has extended the “disturbed area” status of four districts under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA) for six months.

Four districts – Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo and Sivasagar – have been identified as areas requiring special attention due to the continued presence of armed groups.

The Assam Police has submitted a proposal to the Home Ministry seeking extension of the “troubled area” status of four districts. Assam police said the law and order situation in the state has generally improved. However, a militant group remains active in these areas.

After due consideration, the Ministry of Home Affairs approved the extension of AFSPA to four regions with effect from April 1.
