A pint of a creamy, dark stout might be considered an acquired taste, but the silky-smooth brew seems to have attracted a legion of unlikely new fans.

Brewer Vernon Amor isn’t surprised about describing the darkest things beer “Complex, smooth and full-bodied”.

“Historically, stocky people do have a very masculine image. It goes hand in hand with footballhosting major sporting events,” he said.

But now new customers are trying it.

“Women and younger drinkers under 25 are trying it for the first time and realizing it’s an absolutely fantastic product,” he said.

“It has a wealth of flavor and character, as well as a long tradition and provenance of great British beers.”

Vernon’s company, Herefordshire-based Wye Valley Brewery, is producing more Wholesome Stout than ever and recently rebranded it as Nightjar on draft. Sale.

“Since we rebranded, our sales have increased by more than 100% in the past 12 months,” he said.

Supermarket sales also surged.

Although Guinness remains the largest seller, there are a plethora of new products entering the market as part of the craft beer boom.

“Over the past few years there has been an emergence of a younger generation of drinkers who are looking for beers of outstanding quality and unique flavours to challenge their taste buds,” Tesco’s spirits buyer Christian Clark explain.

“Due to growing interest, we now stock 15 different stouts – including traditional, craft and locally brewed ranges – which would have been unthinkable just five years ago.”

Pip Preece, bar manager at The Barrels in Hereford, has been ordering two to three times the stout a week these days.

“During the Six Nations we certainly knew we were importing a lot of dark beers and that didn’t stop this year – we have to continue to do that,” she said.

“So normally it would have been just football fans. Now it’s anybody.”

“I just think it’s a good thing that more women drink it…of course. It’s not a man’s drink…it doesn’t need to be, does it?!”
