Itanagar, Nov 1 (IANS) Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lieutenant General (retd) KT Paranaik has assured the Congress delegation that the state government has been sensitized and security agencies have been directed to ensure everyone’s security during the upcoming panchayat elections. Officials gave this information on Saturday.
A delegation of Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) led by its president Bosiram Siram met the Governor at the Raj Bhavan on Friday, a Raj Bhavan official said.
The Congress delegation shared its apprehensions over the security situation in Tirap, Changlang and Longding districts in view of the upcoming panchayat elections, the official said.
He said the Governor appreciated their concerns and assured them that all necessary measures were being taken to ensure enhanced security during the grassroots elections.
The Governor stressed that Panchayat elections should be conducted in a peaceful, free and fair manner reflecting the true spirit of democracy.
“The Governor informed the delegation that the state government has been sensitized and security agencies are being instructed to ensure everyone’s security during the panchayat elections,” the Raj Bhavan official said.
He said the Governor has already chaired a series of security review meetings, including meetings with elected representatives in Namsai, the district administration, police officials and security agencies deployed in the Tirap-Changlong-Longding (TCL) region.
Similar high-level meetings were also held in Khonsa and Longding to review and strengthen security arrangements in the eastern districts. General elections for Panchayats in Arunachal Pradesh are going to be held next month.
The last general elections were held in December 2020. The State Election Commission had earlier conducted by-elections for specific vacant Gram Panchayat and Zilla Parishad constituencies.
Siram was accompanied by APCC working president Techi Tagi Tara and general secretaries-cum-spokespersons Chera Taya and Kon Jirjo Jotham during his meeting with the Governor.
APCC said in a statement that the Governor listened patiently to the concerns raised and shared his understanding of the prevailing situation in the TCL districts.
He assured the delegation that he would take up the matter with Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Chief Secretary Manish Gupta and Director General of Police (DGP) Anand Mohan to ensure necessary action.
