liverpool head coach Arne Slott Facing a growing crisis at Anfield, he admitted he would “consider everything” in an attempt to stop a disappointing run of nine defeats in 12 matches.
This sequence represents the club’s worst performance since the 1953–54 season, placing immense pressure on the Dutchman as he battles a squad severely hampered by injuries and a notable lack of depth.
Despite a substantial summer outlay of £450 million, the options for slots for significant changes are severely limited.
Half of this significant sum was spent on Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, both of whom were struggling with injuries and adjusting to their new surroundings.
The extent of the team’s weaknesses became painfully clear during the Champions League defeat in midweek psv eindhovenWhere the slot was unable to fill its full quota of 11 substitutes. The bench included two goalkeepers with 18-year-old Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha, who only turned 17 in August.
To further complicate matters, Joe Gomez received a pain-killing injection for a knee problem last week, limiting his availability.
Wataru Endo, a defensive midfielder, has made only two Carabao Cup starts from six appearances, appearing to not be trusted with more prominent roles by the slot.
The absence of a recognized right-back and inconsistent form of central defender Ibrahima Konate Highlight defensive weaknesses.
The defensive problems were further compounded by new centre-half Giovanni Leoni’s season-ending ACL injury on his debut in September.
Addressing the possibility of giving marginal players a chance, Slott said: “I think you consider everything. So far, I would have decided differently.”
He elaborated on the constant balancing act: “It’s always a balance if you don’t change people think ‘Ah, you should change more’ but there was a period this season where we lost and I made some changes and people complained I made some changes too much and it was never the same team.”
Slot confirmed that he is considering his options for the upcoming West Ham match: “Of course, I consider (changes) but I can’t tell you yet what the final outcome of that consideration will be for Sunday.”
He also explained his decision not to start Gómez against Eindhoven, citing Konate’s missed training and the risk of being left with too few defenders.
“It was definitely a possibility for him to start but Konate didn’t train two days before the (Eindhoven) game,” Slot said.
“If you don’t have that many defenders to start with, two players who might not be able to play the full 90 is kind of a risk.
“I decided that if Ibou got injured I would keep him there (on the bench) and not have to make two substitutions because we would probably have been left with only one or two defenders.”
