According to recent reports, Apple is developing a new iPad Air model that will come in 10.9-inch and 12.9-inch display sizes. Display technical details for the larger, sixth-generation iPad Air models, which Apple is expected to release a month ago, have now leaked online. Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) CEO and co-founder Ross Young has revealed that the so-called 12.9-inch iPad Air will have a better display than its smaller sibling.

The rumored 12.9-inch iPad Air model will feature a Mini LED screen, Young said in a report postal on X (formerly Twitter). This is a significant upgrade for users of the IPS LCD panel on the 10.9-inch iPad Air (fifth generation) model currently sold by Apple (review). Compared with LCD panels, Mini LED screens will greatly improve image quality in terms of brightness and power consumption.

Young said Apple plans to use leftover Mini LED panels from the 12.9-inch iPad Pro model on the upcoming larger iPad Air model. Previous reports claimed that the company’s next-generation iPad Pro model will be equipped with an OLED screen for the first time.

While this means the larger iPad Air (6th generation) model will likely get a major display upgrade, it’s unclear whether the 10.9-inch model will come with an IPS LCD screen. That’s because Apple’s smaller iPad Pro model comes with a slightly larger 11-inch screen.

The company could also increase the display size of the smaller iPad Air to reuse leftover Mini LED panels, but we won’t know more about its specs until the company launches the next iPad model.

This year’s iPad Air models are also expected to feature a landscape camera for the first time, allowing users to make video calls when the iPad is held horizontally, unlike previous models. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is expected to launch new iPad Air and iPad Pro models in May.
