Apple Watch calls 911, saves New York cyclist's life after horrific car crash

Smartwatches have played an important role in saving many lives.

The Apple Watch has proven to be a lifesaver many times. Many reports have shown how it can save lives by detecting user health anomalies using sensors that measure heart rate, electrocardiogram, and more. In the latest such incident, the Apple Watch saved the life of a cyclist in New York who was involved in a horrific bicycle accident. The incident occurred last month when real estate agent Eric Zollinger was riding a Citi Bike home from his office in a pouring rain.

However, the commute takes a serious turn when he encounters a hidden, flooded pothole. His bike hit a pothole, causing him to fall off the bike onto the pavement. Despite injuries to his nose, face and knees, Mr. Zollinger continued home but later collapsed in the bathroom and hit his body against the tub.

Fortunately, his Apple Watch detected the fall, automatically called 911, and notified emergency contacts of his location. Notably, the smartwatch has built-in fall detection, which will connect users to emergency services if a “serious fall is detected.”

“The next thing I remember hearing was, ‘911, what’s your emergency?’” Zollinger said of the incident.

He then went to a local hospital for evaluation. Fortunately, scans showed he had no broken bones and he was later released.

Mr. Zollinger praised the smartwatch for its quick response and credited it with saving his life. “If the watch hadn’t alerted me, I don’t know what would have happened,” he said.

“I feel very lucky and grateful for what the Apple Watch has done for me. It’s a very smart watch. Apple has thought of everything,” Mr. Zollinger added.

Smartwatches have played an important role in saving many lives. Last year, a 42-year-old British man shared how a smartwatch helped him survive a heart attack.according to Express.Company UKPaul Wapham, chief executive of Hockey Wales, was on a morning jog near his home in Morristown, Swansea, when he felt a sharp pain in his chest. He managed to contact his wife via his watch, who rushed him to hospital.

If your Apple Watch detects that you’ve been motionless for one minute, it automatically places an emergency call and sends a message with your location to your emergency contacts.
