Apple makes iPhone repairs easier and cheaper – all the details

By | Published | No Comments

After launching a self-service iPhone repair service a few years ago, Apple has now announced support for second-hand genuine parts. Until a few years ago, repairing an iPhone was a headache, especially for those who didn’t live near an Apple repair center. Unlike other companies, the iPhone maker does not allow repairs on its own; only Apple experts are authorized to perform repairs. That changed in 2022, when it announced a self-repair program that would enable iPhone users to repair their devices using parts and repair kits provided by Apple. The program now appears to have been expanded to include genuine second-hand parts.

Apple expands support for second-hand genuine parts

The iPhone maker said the move will allow users to repair their iPhones with the help of genuine used parts. This may reduce repair costs. To ensure the privacy, safety and security of the user as well as the device, after the used parts are installed, a process called “pairing” takes place. It will confirm whether the installed parts are genuine and collect relevant information.

As a result, users no longer need to provide their iPhone’s serial number when ordering parts from Apple Self-Service Stores. This is valid for repairs not related to the logic board.

Announcing the move, John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, said: “Over the past two years, Apple teams have been innovating in product design and manufacturing to enable repairs using older Apple parts without endangering users’ safety. Safety, security or privacy. With this latest expansion of our repair program, we are excited to offer our customers more choice and convenience while helping extend the life of our products and their parts.”

Apple announced that the program will begin this fall and will include some iPhones. In addition, Apple has also extended its activation lock function to iPhone parts to prevent stolen iPhones from being disassembled into parts.
