Apple CEO Tim Cook formally confirmed the continued development of Apple’s generative AI capabilities during today’s quarterly earnings call. Cook said the company’s generative AI software capabilities are expected to be available to consumers “later this year.”
These comments from Cook corroborate insights shared by industry experts, including Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Recent speculation suggests that iOS 18 will be the “biggest” update in the operating system’s history. iOS 18 is expected to be released later this year during WWDC in the summer.
“Looking ahead, we will continue to invest in these and other technologies that will shape the future. This includes artificial intelligence, where we continue to spend a significant amount of time and effort, and we are excited to share later this year what we are doing in this area. The details of the work being done,” Tim Cook said.
Cook concluded by adding that there is a “huge opportunity” for Apple in generative AI, but he couldn’t elaborate yet.
It’s unclear how Apple will integrate generative AI into iOS, and possibly even into iPadOS and macOS, but reports say it’s expected to be integrated into Messages, Apple Music, Pages, Keynote, and, of course, Siri and other critical applications.
Additionally, Cook’s comments come as most rivals, including Google and Samsung, roll out not just one feature, but a range of AI-driven generative features in their latest flagships, so Apple The pressure on companies to match is certainly growing. And, with artificial intelligence becoming a major selling point for these smartphones, it’s no wonder Apple wants to hop aboard this train and reap the benefits itself.
