Russia’s top investigative agency said on Thursday that another suspect has been detained as an accomplice in a gunman’s attack on a suburban concert hall in Moscow that killed 143 people.
The latest person to be detained was involved in financing Friday’s attack on the Saffron City Music Hall, where gunmen shot people waiting for a performance by a popular rock band and then set the building on fire, a statement from the investigative committee said. It did not provide further details on the suspect’s identity or alleged conduct.
Officials previously said 11 suspects had been arrested, four of whom allegedly carried out the attacks. The four, identified as Tajikistan citizens, appeared in a Moscow court on Sunday on terrorism charges and showed signs of being severely beaten. During the hearing, one of them appeared to be nearly unconscious.
A faction of the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the massacre. But Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, have insisted without providing evidence that Ukraine and the West played a role in the attack.
“Confirmed data indicate that the perpetrators of the terrorist attacks received large amounts of money and cryptocurrency from Ukraine for the preparation of the crime,” the Investigative Committee statement said.
Ukraine denies involvement and its officials claim Moscow is using the accusation as a pretext to intensify its fighting in Ukraine.
Health officials said Thursday that about 70 people remained in hospital with injuries from the attack, many of them seriously.
