Alana King took seven wickets as Australia registered a spectacular seven-wicket win over South Africa in their final Cricket World Cup group match.
Australia suffered a blow in the seventh over when Megan Schutt dismissed South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt for 31 and Tazmin Britts was trapped LBW by Kim Garth for just six runs.
King then produced a brilliant performance with the ball, destroying the batting line-up to take seven for 18 – her best bowling figures so far in the Women’s World Cup – as the Proteas were bundled out for 97.
South Africa had early success when Phoebe Litchfield and Ellyse Perry were out in quick succession, but Beth Mooney and Georgia Voll took control with a 76-run partnership.
Mooney was out for 42 before Annabel Sutherland and Woll gave Australia victory with 199 balls to spare and victory means they will go on top of the table to face fourth-placed India in the semi-finals.
“As a bowler you always like wickets,” King said. “I can play a different role. If it’s holding one end, and then other bowlers coming in to take wickets, I’m happy to play any role, as long as I’m playing my part for Australia and it puts us in a good position.”
South Africa will face England in the other last four matches.
