AIIMS-Delhi conducts first double kidney transplant for dialysis patient

The surgery was performed by the transplant team (representative) on December 22 last year

New Delhi:

For the first time, AIIMS Hospital in Delhi has performed a double kidney transplant on a patient undergoing dialysis, the hospital said.

The surgery was performed by the Department of Surgery and Department of Nephrology at AIIMS in collaboration with the Organ Retrieval Banking Organization (ORBO).

The donor, a 78-year-old woman, suffered severe head injuries due to a fall on December 19 and was admitted to AIIMS Trauma Center where she was later declared brain dead. the hospital said.

He said her family agreed to organ donation.

“The challenge was that due to her advanced age, her single kidney was not sufficient to meet the needs of a dialysis patient. Hence, the decision was made to use two kidneys from a single recipient,” Krishna said. The recipient is a 51-year-old woman on dialysis.

“She desperately needed a kidney,” he said.

The surgery was performed by the operating room transplant team on December 22 last year. The doctor said he was now sharing the feat with the media because “we want to make sure the patient is doing well.”

During the surgery, both kidneys were placed on the recipient’s right side, one on top of the other, doctors said.

“The surgery was complicated as we had to place two kidneys in the restricted area. Normally, one kidney is transplanted,” Krishna said, adding that the recipient’s recovery was uneventful and both kidneys were doing well after the surgery. .

“This one-of-a-kind surgery is a great example of using limited resources to bridge the huge supply and demand gap in India for organs by using organs from elderly donors who would normally be rejected,” he said.

The patient has been followed since the surgery occurred. Dr. Krishna said she was discharged from the hospital within three weeks of the surgery.

“We wanted to make sure the patient was doing well before the media reported on this double transplant,” the doctor said.
