All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazagam (AIADMK) general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami criticized the central government for notifying the rules for implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA). The AIADMK leader called it a “huge historical mistake”.

“In the backdrop of declaring the general election, the ruling BJP government at the Center issued a gazette notification that the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) 2019 will be implemented from today. The AIADMK has been insisting that the bill should not affect the country’s Any indigenous community,” Mr Palaniswami said in a post on X on Tuesday.

The AIADMK leader claimed that this was done for “electoral interests” and “dividing people”.

He further wrote, “In view of the upcoming elections, the CAA has been implemented in electoral interests to create division among the people. The AIADMK strongly opposes this move by the central government to divide the people.”

Mr Palaniswami said: “The central government has committed a huge historic mistake by passing this notification. The AIADMK will never allow this amendment. I want to tell you that the AIADMK will democratically oppose this along with people across the country Behavior.”

AIADMK MLA VV Rajan Chellappa on Tuesday said his party signed a conditional CAA assurance during its alliance with the BJP.

“The then AIADMK government under Edappadi K Palaniswami did not sign the CAA wholeheartedly. The AIADMK signed the CAA conditionally during its alliance with the BJP. The AIADMK will always Support good deeds. We are not fully supportive of the CAA,” Mr. Chelapa said.

The Union Home Ministry had notified the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) rules on March 11, days before announcing the schedule for the Lok Sabha elections.

The CAA rules were proposed by the Narendra Modi government and passed by Parliament in 2019 to provide persecuted non-Muslim immigrants (Hindus, Sikhs, Jains) from Bangladesh, Pakistan and India.
