Srinagar, August 04 (KDC): After 137 years, there is a prestigious symbol of the historic Nedau Hotel -Kashmir’s colonial past and political heritage in Gulmarg – officially taken by the Gularg Development Authority (GDA).
On Monday, acting as an assistant director of tourism, nominated property officer, according to the news-active agency in Srinagar, oversee the eviction and transfer of the campus to the GDA. The property was spread over around 98 kanals and 11 Marlus of Prime Government Land, occupying the Nedau family for more than a century. The family had received several leases from the government by 1985, but failed to renew the lease after its termination. In February 2015, the J&K government officially rejected its lease extension petition. Subsequently, the High Court also rejected the challenge of the hotel, declaring it a “unauthorized business” under the J&K public campus (eviction of unauthorized people) Act, 1988.
The eviction notice issued on Saturday (2 August) said:
“Jammu and Kashmir public campus (eviction of unauthorized people) Act, 1988, in the practice of powers provided under the Act, 1988, and in compliance with the orders of the Hon’ble High Court and Hon’ble Supreme Court, ordered that it is currently known as the thighs. Proper.”
District Magistrate Baramulla was also requested to provide logical assistance to ensure smooth execution of the process.
Built in 1888 in 1888 by Michael Adam Nedau, a European entrepreneur, who discovered Gulmarg as a beautiful retreat in the 1800s, Nedau’s hotel soon became a destination for the Royals, colonial authorities and political elite classes. The Lahore branch of Nedau was first established in the 1870s.
The family’s relationship with the political history of Kashmir is deep. Michael’s eldest son Harry Nedau married Mir Jaan, a Rajput Gurjar woman from Gulmarg. His daughter, Akbar Jahn, later became the wife of the founder of the National Conference Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah. It made Nedas relatives of the current political leadership in Jammu and Kashmir along with former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
Currently, the descendants of Harry Nedau, Omar. Nedau is the owner of a group of hotels in Nedau.
With Monday’s formal acquisition, the government has gained control over a historic site that stood at the intersection of the colonial attraction of Kashmir and its political development. (KDC)
