Adobe launches Acrobat AI assistant that can generate PDF summaries

Adobe has finally launched the ability to generate artificial intelligence (AI) support for its Acrobat and Reader platforms. Known as Acrobat AI Assistant, the company first launched the AI feature in beta in February 2024. After nearly two months of testing, it is now open to users around the world. The AI assistant is available on desktop and web clients. Additionally, Adobe highlighted that the company is developing text-to-video AI models.

Announcing the news, Abhigyan Modi, senior vice president of Adobe Document Cloud, said: “Whether you’re filing taxes, collaborating on contracts, or creating and sharing research papers, Acrobat is the trusted PDF platform. Acrobat AI Assistant empowers billions of people to read from Document Turn enables them to quickly and easily gain insights, format and share content from a variety of digital documents.”

According to Adobe, Acrobat AI Assistant is an AI-driven generative conversation engine integrated with Reader and Acrobat workflows. It helps users in many ways. The chatbot can recommend questions and answer user queries based on the content of the PDF. It can follow conversational speech, just like major AI chatbots. AI assistants can also generate summaries from long documents in an easy-to-read format.

Additionally, Acrobat AI Assistant can generate citations using a custom attribution engine. This helps users verify the origin of answers given by the AI. The company claims the AI also provides clickable links to find information in long documents. Summary can be easily shared using the copy button provided in the interface. In terms of data privacy, Adobe said it will not store or use the content of customer documents to train AI assistants without the customer’s consent.

In addition to the familiar web and desktop interfaces, the company is offering a beta version of the Acrobat AI Assistant on Acrobat Reader mobile. The feature also supports voice commands. Additionally, users can find the AI chatbot in Acrobat’s existing extensions for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.

Acrobat AI Assistant will be available to users with free Reader or paid Acrobat Personal plans if they purchase the new AI Assistant add-on subscription, which starts at $4.99 (approximately Rs. 420) per month. Adobe says this is early access pricing and may increase after June 5.
