Adobe has announced the ability to generate artificial intelligence (AI) support for its web client and Acrobat desktop application. The software giant has added an AI assistant that can perform multiple tasks and help users easily understand and analyze large PDF files. One notable feature will summarize files and render them into formatted and easy-to-understand blocks of text. The feature is currently in beta testing, but the company stressed it will soon be available to Acrobat customers through an add-on subscription plan. The Reader app will also soon gain AI capabilities.

The company announces artificial intelligence capabilities postal On X (formerly Twitter), it demonstrated the snippet-generating feature in a short video. In the upper right corner of the Adobe Acrobat interface, you can see an AI Assistant button next to the sharing option. Clicking the button will open a popup with four different options placed in a side panel. These icons include Generate Summary, Chat, Bookmarks, and Menu options.

Generative summarization is exactly what the name suggests. It can take large files (supports PDF, Word, Powerpoint, meeting minutes, etc.) and displays a short summary of the file. Below the summary, individual topics are shared in collapsible windows that users can click to get information about their details. There is an option to copy the text, rate it, and report it in case the generated content is incorrect.

Other things the AI assistant can do include adding citations so users can verify the source of answers, clickable links to help users navigate to what they need in long documents, and the option to view the information in formatted output. Users can also ask the AI specific questions related to the file’s content, which the chatbot will answer. To protect user data, Adobe said, “AI Assistant functionality in Reader and Acrobat is governed by data security agreements, and customer document content will not be stored or used to train AI Assistant without customer consent.”

The new AI Assistant feature is currently available in beta for Acrobat Standard and Pro customers, as well as Teams desktop and web English subscription plans, the company said. This feature will also be available to Reader desktop customers in the coming weeks. Once the feature exits beta, Reader and Acrobat customers will have to pay for a new add-on subscription plan to access these features.
